Conference 1 | March 1987
The Hawk's Cay Conference
Location: Hawk's Cay, Florida

The men who were the key advisors to President John F. Kennedy during the Cuban missile crisis gathered together in Hawk's Cay, Florida to re-live the "13 days" of October '62. They have reviewed a briefing notebook of declassified documents from the period, and they are ready to discuss their views of the crisis with each other and with scholars of the event.

This sign outside the meeting room caused many a giggle. "Welcome to the Cuban missile crisis" ... we thought the crisis was over! "Private Party" ... hmmm ... it was not fun at the time.

This is not an add for men's fashion. It is New York Times photographer Randy Taylor taking the picture of Thedore Sorensen (special advisor to Kennedy), McGeorge Bundy (National Security Advisor) and Robert McNamara (Secretary of Defense) for the cover of the NYT Magazine (30 August 1987), to accompany an article on the conference by J. Anthony Lukas.
