DS Requirements
For students declaring a DS concentration in 2007-08 or later, the DS faculty recommend the following course of study comprising of ten courses, in addition to the required senior thesis seminar:
- Two Core Courses (ideally in the sophomore year):
- DEVL 1000 Seminar in Development Studies
- ECON 0510. Introduction to the Economics of Development. (Students who choose ECON0111 from the list below should take ECON1510 or ECON1560 instead)
- At least two “disciplinary core” courses from the list below (ideally in junior year):
- ECON1110 (in conjunction with 1510 [see above]. Economic Development
- ANTH 1320 International Development
- SOC 1600 Comparative Development or SOC 1620 Globalization and Conflict
- POLS 1240 Politics, Markets, and States in Developing Countries or POLS 1460 International Political Economy
- At least one methods course from a menu of courses (or similar) (strongly recommended for junior year):
- DEVL 1500 Methods in Development Research
- ENVS 1500 Human Impacts on Ecosystem Function
- ECON 1620 Introduction to Econometrics or 1630 Econometrics
- POLS 1600 Political Research Methods
- EDU 1110 Introductory Statistics for Education Research and Policy Analysis
- SOC 1100. Introductory statistics for Sociological Inquiry
- At least one advanced seminar course related to Development (senior year):
- ENG1930 Social Entrepreneurship
- One of the DEVL1800 Seminars
- One of the IR 1800 Seminars, such as ANTH 1830 Ethnography of Global Connection
- Required DEVL 1980 Thesis Writing in Development Studies (senior year)
- Four elective courses from the approved list of courses, with at least two courses focusing on regions in the developing world
