Hilary Kaplan

Hilary Kaplan is a Ph.D. candidate in Comparative Literature. She holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Yale, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing (Poetry) from San Francisco State University. Her dissertation explores contemporary innovative poetry that addresses environmental crisis, with a particular focus on tensions between ideas of a global environment and ideas of national language. Her research interests include environmental culture, modern and contemporary Brazilian and U.S. poetry and art, and translation. She has received grants from the PEN Translation Fund, Itaú Cultural, and the Tinker Foundation. She is currently translating Rilke Shake, a book of poems by Angélica Freitas. Starting in December, she will be a Guest Commentator on Brazilian poetry for Jacket2.
