Aleysia is a fourth year PhD student in ethnomusicology. She is researching the influence of Cuban music in Senegalese and Malian popular music and this music’s presence on the world music scene today. For her masters degree, she looked at the transnational movements and practices of salsa and the ways in which various conceptions of race and gender come together on dance floors in which diverse groups of people participate. Aleysia completed her Bachelors of Music at the University of Toronto where she enjoyed playing the oboe in a Serbian Orchestra and learning how to dance.
