Position Announcement

The University of New Mexico Libraries (UL) has an opening (JR#6349) for a Visiting Assistant Professor/Curator of Latin American and Iberian Studies. This is a full-time, 12 month faculty position with non-tenure-track status for a period of up to three years. This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Research & Instruction Services. The desired start date is January 2, 2008. The salary is negotiable from a minimum of $50,000 and includes full benefits.

Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
· Masters Degree in Library Science or a Doctoral degree in Latin
American Studies or a Doctoral degree in an academic discipline with a
concentration in Latin America.
· Statement confirming fluency in either the Spanish or Portuguese language.
· Statement confirming fluency in the English language.
· Experience in collection management or in collection processing or in
curation of Latin American and Iberian materials in an academic library.

Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience in reference and instruction
· Experience in grant writing.
· Experience in donor relations.
· Demonstrated ability to plan and organize projects and/or activities.
· Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in both
the English language and in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
· Demonstrated leadership experience.
· Demonstrated experience with technological advances in libraries
and/or special collections.
· Experience teaching university-level courses.

Primary Duties
To develop, manage, and promote the Latin American and Iberian collections in all formats. The collection management responsibilities include selecting materials, working with approval plans, working with vendors, allocating the budget, working with technical services to set priorities for processing and preservation of materials, and coordinating the activities of other selectors working with these collections. Public services responsibilities include providing library instruction and reference for these areas. Other duties include working with the Latin American and Iberian Institute (LAII) and other Latin American studies units to plan and carry out activities for campus and community outreach. The successful candidate will work with donors in cooperation with the UL’s Development Office, will write grants, and develop exhibits. The candidate will provide effective and timely supervision of assigned employees including all required training, career development, and performance reviews. The candidate selected may also teach a course in one of the Latin American and/or Iberian studies areas.

· Management Committee of the Division of Iberian and Latin American
Resources and Services (DILARES)
· May serve on the LAII Executive Committee
· May be a member of UNM’s Latin American Faculty Concillium

Environment
The Division of Iberian and Latin American Resources and Services (DILARES) is a multi-departmental unit within the UNM University Libraries, encompassing both traditional public service, collection development, and cataloging operations as well as specialized research, fundraising, and outreach functions. DILARES collections serve as one of the major repositories of Latin American resources in the United States. They contain an estimated 415,000 monographic volumes (including some 27,000 rare books and other scarce imprints housed in Special Collections), 1,100 current serial subscriptions, more than half a million microform units, 13,500 posters, 4,500 photographs, approximately 310 cubic feet of manuscript material, and a significant array of electronic resources. These holdings cover all of the social sciences, humanities, and fine arts as well as several professional fields. Within the University Libraries, opportunities for research are particularly strong in Latin American history, art history, photography, and popular graphics, areas in which the Library has built up extensive collections of original source material in a variety of formats. The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) administers UNM's interdisciplinary programs in Latin American Studies and supports the university's Latin American and Iberian activities in all of UNM's eleven schools and colleges. LAII is a designated National Resource Center for Latin America (U.S. Department of Education Title VI) in a consortium with New Mexico State University's Center for Latin America and Border Studies.
