Second CLAS Graduate Student Conference "Re-figuring Latin America"

April 28, 2008

The Center for Latin American Studies at Brown University is proud to announce its second annual Graduate Student Conference. This one-day conference will take place at the Watson Institute for International Studies on April 28, 2008.

From literary journeys to identity formation, and from economic inequalities to democratic consolidation, the history of Latin America is full of puzzling and unexpected dynamics that often challenge existing theoretical frameworks. New theoretical perspectives are required to understand both the common trends that bring together these countries as well as the specificities that make Latin America a vibrant and diverse region. The Second CLAS Graduate Conference seeks an interdisciplinary discussion aimed at promoting new approximations to the complex realities and the social imaginaries of Latin America. We are looking for contributions of the graduate student community around four broad areas: social and political change, the nexus between history and fiction, movements and identity, and economic challenges and development. Papers will be presented in panels around the common themes, although contributions in other areas are also welcomed.

Papers should have not yet been presented at any other event of the Watson Institute for International Studies. Abstracts of 200-250 words are DUE BY MARCH 20 2008. Please send abstracts to Felipe Valencia (felipe_valencia@brown.edu).
