The Center of Latin American Studies has embarked on two significant projects inspired by the spring 2007 launch of its Caribbean Initiative:
Cuba Task-Force
Brown Study Abroad: The College Curriculum Committee has approved the Brown Cuba Study Abroad program for fall 2008. Ten Brown students will study with ten Cuban students at the Casa de las Américas in Havana for the semester. Adrián López Denis will be coordinating the program and teaching one of the on-site courses. The application deadline is March 1, 2008.
Cuba Film and Lecture Series: An exciting film and lecture series brings some of the leading scholars of Cuban history, society, and culture to campus this year.
Cuba Faculty Colloquium: Brown faculty and visiting scholars present academic work on the theme “The Cuban Revolution and the Future of Cuba” throughout the year.
Haitian-French Caribbean Project
Basic Haitian Creole: Patrick Sylvain joined the CLAS faculty to teach two sections of Basic Haitian Creole.
The Haitian-French Caribbean Task Force will be presenting a report and proposal to President Ruth Simmons in February 2008 that will expand and enrich the study of this area of the Caribbean at Brown University.

In addition, the Center launched a new film festival this spring:
CineBRASIL: Brown's Brazilian Film Festival - March 5- 9, 2008
The Center for Latin American Studies and the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies are proud to announce the reincarnation of Brown's Brazilian Film Festival. This event will feature films representing a broad spectrum of genres and subjects and is a collaboration with Cinemateca Brasileira, the foremost institution for film studies in Brazil.

Finally, the Center convened an incredibly successful two day conference in February:
Changes in the Andes: Realities, Challenges, & Opportunities for Inter-American Relations- February 12-13, 2008
The purpose of the conference was to analyze how the current situation in the Andean countries of Bolivia, Ecuador, and Venezuela influences our understanding of the processes of social development as well as economic and political liberalization throughout the region. Despite the uniqueness of their experiences, these three countries seem to jointly represent the challenges and opportunities faced by societies trying to re-accommodate the logics of political and economic liberalization of the past two decades in order to foster social, ethnic, economic and political inclusion, and address concerns of growth and equity.
