John Birkelund, chairman of the Board of Overseers, is general partner with Saratoga Partners. He is former senior advisor to UBS Warburg LLC and past chairman and chief executive officer of Dillon, Read and Co. Inc. He began his career as an investment banker in 1956, and is a past director of the New York Stock Exchange and the Securities Industry Association. He has served on many corporate boards, including N.M. Rothschild and Co., Barings Brothers, C.R. Bard, and Copperweld Corporation, and on the advisory boards of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and ORIX USA Corporation. Mr. Birkelund served as a trustee of Brown University from 1984 through 2001, is a Trustee of the New York Public Library, The Frick Collection, The American Academy in Berlin and the Senate of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and has been elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He continues to be engaged in private investment activities, and is particularly interested in Eastern Europe as the chairman of the Polish-American Enterprise Fund.
