Critical Oral History: Cuban Missile Crisis and Risk of Nuclear War in the 21st Century

The Cuban Missile Crisis at 40: Reflections on the Havana Conference

The files below are provided by the National Security Archive, compiled for the 40th anniversary conference on the missile crisis held in Havana in October 2002. A truly multinational and multi-archival effort, this collection comprises hundreds of new, previously highly classified, records from 10 countries. The main conference briefing book, featuring selections of the most significant new materials, is followed by supplementary documentation from Cuba, the former Soviet Union and the USA (specifically, newly released daily CIA reports and the State Department's FRUS volume on the crisis). Finally, Castro's secret speech of January 1968 is also included to provide more of Cuba's perspective on the "October crisis" of 1962.
