Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQIf I am graduating in December, when should I take DS 198?DS198 is only offered in the Fall, and should be taken when you are actually beginning to research and write your thesis. If you have a good idea of what you want to work on by your Junior year, you should take it then. If not wait for your Senior year. When should I get a thesis advisor?Ideally by the end of your Junior year, but no later than early in your Senior year. The longer you wait, the harder it will be for you to get the advisor you want. Can I get course credit for writing my senior thesis?DS190 and 191: Concentration Special Project can be taken as credit for thesis writing during your last semester. DS190/191 are only available for one semester of Brown credit, and cannot be counted towards fulfillment of concentration requirements. Your thesis advisor's signature is required to get credit. Can I focus on Europe or the U.S. as a DS concentrator? If you are interested in the historical experience of development in the U.S. or Europe that's fine. Many of the concepts and theories in development are useful for studying social and economic problems in the contemporary industrialized world. However, they are not the focus of most development classes, so you would probably be more comfortable in another concentration. How important is it that I take courses in economics?Very (but not required). Can I take DS concentration courses S/NC? Yes. Most DS students do study a foreign language, but there is no language requirement for DS. How much credit can I get for courses (including SIT courses) I took abroad? You should plan on counting no more than two courses taken abroad toward fulfilling your DS requirements. Under certain circumstances, the Director can approve counting more courses. DS concentrators request credit for courses taken abroad directly from the Director. Can I use an Independent Study for DS concentration credit?Yes. DS concentration credit is permitted for independent study courses on an individual basis. Such credit is determined by the concentration advisor or DS Program Director beforehand. It is not awarded for independent study courses retroactively. Do internships undertaken in the United States or abroad count for DS concentration credit? No. The DS Program does not give concentration credit for internships. While we consider internships to be educational and intellectually rewarding, we do not confer credit for such work. How many courses can I double-count, i.e., use for DS and another concentration? You can double-count a total of two courses with DS. [ Back To Top ] |
