Considering DS?

Are you interested in the social, economic and political challenges that developing countries face? Are you willing to learn and draw on theories and methods from a wide range of disciplines? Are you ready to write a senior thesis? If your answer to all these questions is yes, they you should consider DS.

The difference between DS and International Relations:
  • All DS students must write a thesis. Only honors students write a thesis in IR.
  • DS is more explicitly focused on the developing world, though it does draw from the European experience of development.
  • IR theory tends to focus more on relations between nations, whereas development theory is more concerned with dynamics within nations.
  • DS draws equally from all the social sciences, whereas IR tends to draw more heavily on political science than other social science disciplines.
  • Course requirements for DS students are more flexible than for IR. Only DEVL 1980 is required.
