Mr. Leruo Molotlegi is the 36th recorded King of the Bafokeng people of South Africa. Since ascending the throne in 2000, King Leruo has been working towards achieving sustainable economic development for the Bafokeng ethnic group, numbering approximately 300,000. As owners of the land that includes the world's second largest platinum reserve, the Bafokeng control considerable mineral wealth, making them politically influential in their own right, as well as a powerful voice for traditional communities in South Africa. Nevertheless, the Bafokeng's system of government is under pressure both from the national government and from within the Kingdom itself. King Leruo will address these and other issues as he considers the place of hereditary rulers such as himself in a modern, democratic African state.
