The Singaporean Community at Brown University will play host to the 1st Singapore Lecture Series. Titled "Crossroads: Directions and Disjuncture in Singaporean Society", the lecture series seeks to understand Singapore's sociopolitical development and its possibilities in the context of recent leadership change. Three seminars have been planned. Seminar 1, "Unraveling Singapore's Confucian Democracy", will be co-led by Singapore's former solicitor-general, Mr. Francis Seow and Professor Jae Ku, postdoctoral fellow at the Watson Institute. Seminar 2, "Who Are 'We, the Citizens'?", is led by Mr Colin Goh and Miss Woo Yen Yen, political satirists and co-founders of the political website talkingcock.com. Seminar 3, "What's Lit Got to do with it?" is led by Prof Chin Woon Ping, poet and visiting Prof at Dartmouth University.

Singapore is indeed at a crossroad. Having achieved some measure of economic success since its independence 40 years ago, the ruling People's Action Party is faced with a populace that is both financially strong and politically restive. It appears then, that political reform is just around the corner. However, the PAP has changed strategies and is actively co-opting opposition. At the same time, Singaporeans do acknowledge that the PAP, though condescending at times, has in fact performed well.
