Watson Institute Funding Guidelines: Brown University Student Group Initiatives

About the Watson Institute

Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies pursues innovative solutions to contemporary global problems that bridge the gap between academia and policymaking. The Institute approaches its research, teaching, and public education on international affairs from a multidisciplinary and multinational perspective, promoting the work of faculty, students, visiting scholars, and policy practitioners who address issues related to global security, development, and governance.

 

Criteria for Support

The Watson Institute considers requests for funding from student groups wishing to convene an event on campus that relates to its mission as stated above. Please note that the Watson Institute does not consider requests for funding to cover costs associated with individuals or groups of students attending conferences or workshops off-campus.

Important criteria for judgment includes the following:

  • The initiatives should be consistent with the mission of the Institute, as stated above.
  • The initiatives should come from social scientists working on political, economic, social, or cultural issues, or from scholars from the humanities and natural sciences, whose perspective contributes directly to the understanding of these issues.
  • The initiatives should have a scholarly or educational purpose and comply with University policies on political partisanship and free speech.
  • The initiatives should be open to the Brown community.
  • The initiatives should have a limited duration.
  • The initiatives should not be intended to start permanent institutions and/or structures.
  • The initiative should be no sooner than 2 weeks away.
  • The Watson Institute should not be the only source of funding sought for the event.
  • The event should involve a member or members of the Brown faculty.

 

Submission of Requests:

Requests for funding should be sent to Miranda_Fasulo@brown.edu and should contain the following:

  • A description of the proposed initiative
  • A statement on the initiative's link to the mission of the Watson Institute
  • A detailed budget
  • Sources of other funding (if any)
  • C.V. for invited guests
  • Description of Brown Faculty involvement

 

Acknowledgements:

The initiatives funded by the Institute should be acknowledged as such in all publicity materials.
