2007 Watson International Scholars of the Environment

Shenghe Liu, a 2007 Watson International Scholar of the Environment, is a professor at the Department of Urban and Rural Studies, Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He is also the training officer at China Regional Center of Resource Centers on Urban Agriculture and Food Security (RUAF) Foundation, based in the Netherlands. At the China Regional Center of the RUAF Foundation, he successfully organized two “Policy Awareness Seminars on Urban Agriculture” in Beijing and two training workshops on “Multi-stakeholder Processes for Action Planning and Policy Design (MPAP) on Urban Agriculture” in Chengdu. The third one will be held in Shanghai this year. He has been a land surveyor in Botswana (1991-1993), a visiting scholar at University of Guelph and University of British Columbia in Canada (1997-1998), and a participant at the 2001 Young Scientist Summer Program (YSSP) at the International Institute of Applied System Analysis (IIASA) in Austria.

Liu has been involved in many key national research projects in China as well as some international cooperation projects. Currently, he is the team leader of “The Overall Land Use Planning for Yanqing County of Beijing Municipality in 2005-2020” and the primary investigator of a Natural Sciences Foundation of China project on peri-urbanization in China. He has also served as a key consultant to the Ministry of Land Resources and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Land Resources for the preparation of national and Beijing land use planning in 2020. At the same time, he was appointed as the primary investigator of projects of "Integrating Land Use in Different Regions in China in 2020” and “Land Use Strategies for the Beijing Municipality in 2004-2020.” Moreover, he has collaborated with international institutes and scholars on European Union and World Bank projects.

Liu is a member of the Geographical Society of China and the Land Resources Society of China. He obtained his MSc and PhD degrees at IGSNRR, CAS, majoring in human geography.

Liu participated in the Scholars Online project of the Choices Education Program, an outreach arm of the Watson Institute that brings curriculum and scholarship to secondary schools. View video clips of Liu here.
