2004 Watson International Scholars of the Environment

Joana Luz, a 2004 Watson International Scholar of the Environment, is the Director of the Institute for Environmental Science and Sustainable Development at Bahia Federal University, where her duties include teaching and research, with a focus in water resources. As a Professor she teaches Hydrogeology, Environmental Geology and Water Resources. Many of her projects relate to how changes in hydrologic dynamics can affect the environment, with a special focus on the connection between groundwater and surface water.  Professor Luz earned a Geology degree, an Msc in Geochemistry and Environment, and a Ph.D in Environmental Engineering.
