Transfer Students

Transfer students planning to study IR should keep in mind the following regarding transfer credits:

  • Equivalency: some courses, most importantly our core courses POLS 400: Intro to IR and ECON 110 or 1210, must be equivalents and, therefore, must have official approval, first from these departments, and, then, from Dr. Elliott, the IR concentration advisor. It is important to do this ASAP so you can register for POLS 400 (offered only once/year) if needed. Otherwise, you might get stuck taking this intro course senior year and be ineligible to apply for the honors program, which requires completion of POLS 400 prior to senior year.

  • Course level: some of our requirements must be upper level courses. Therefore, the IR Program must review the syllabus.

  • Coherency: courses only "count" if they make sense to the overall coherency of the student's IR concentration. For example, the elective, an upper level course, must build, in some logical way that you can defend, upon the chosen track of study. Therefore, it is imperative to devise a plan of study by filling out a tentative, yet thoughtful, IR Concentration Worksheet and schedule a meeting with Dr. Elliott.

To expedite this process, please follow these steps:

  • Collect all syllabi for relevant courses from your previous institution.

  • Meet with the appropriate department for equivalencies (don't forget to take your syllabus and the transfer credit form!).

  • Fill out the IR Concentration Worksheet.

  • Schedule a meeting with Dr. Elliott.

Make an appointment by contacting Margareta_Levitsky@brown.edu (863-3318) or check the IR website for open hours. Be sure to take your syllabi, the IR worksheet, and the signed retroactive transfer credit form to your meeting.
