September 16, 2007 Watson Institute Distinguished Visiting Fellow Lincoln Chafee ’75 quietly quit the Republican Party during the summer. Chafee and the party differ on issues ranging from the war to economics to the environment, he told the Providence Journal. “It’s not my party any more,” he said.
Comments on political blogs reflected the political spectrum of opinions. “There’s good news today for Republican conservatives who felt former Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee was nothing but a RINO (Republican in Name Only). And bad news for those who believe the Republican Party could use more consensus-oriented moderates,” said Joe Gandelman, of the Moderate Voice.
