With the convergence of interest between the Fundación Marcelino Botín and the Watson Institute for International Studies and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Brown University, a collaborative teaching and research initiative will support the extension of democracy across Latin America by generating a new network of university students committed to public service and the reform of civic organizations.
In 2010, a one week on-site teaching and research institute in Providence, RI, USA, will be led by Brown University faculty, as part of the Foundation’s International Public Service Network agenda for a 10 week intensive training program for superlative Latin American undergraduates.
In this first week of the Botín Foundation program, Brown will host 25-35 pre-selected undergraduate students from across Latin America, along with scholars and officials associated with the Botín project. During their week in residence, the participants will engage in an intensive study on a range of topics rooted in the liberal arts that contribute to a deeper understanding of the value and impact of public service. Lectures, coursework, and group activity will actively explore a contextual understanding derived from such disciplines as anthropology, economics, history, philosophy, political science, sociology, and the humanities as they apply to cutting edge concepts of public service in Latin America. The interchange of ideas between the young Latin American scholars and students and faculty from Brown University will form a solid platform for the remaining nine weeks of the program to take place in Spain.
