Instructions for Applying for Funding

The Center seeks to promote path-breaking scholarly research and enhance teaching in international economics and thereby make contributions to the policy dialogue on international issues. Specifically, the Center seeks to advance the study of cross-border movements of capital, goods, services, and people, and to enhance the study of cross-country differences in growth, development, and income distribution.

The Center will use a number of strategies to accomplish these objectives, including:
(1) Research conferences to boost the quality and relevance of Center sponsored research, stimulate new areas of inquiry, and disseminate Center sponsored research.
(2) Visitors / Speakers to enrich the intellectual climate on campus and inform participants about innovative research, policy considerations, and market developments
(3) Seed money grants to promote research exhibiting great promise of appearing in top disciplinary journals, shaping scholarship, informing policy debates, and ultimately attracting outside funding.

Initially, the maximum funding for any single seed money grant is $10,000.


Seed money grant proposals should address the following:

  1. Describe the purpose of the research and why the work is intrinsically important.
  2. Explain how the proposed research improves upon past work.
  3. Discuss the planned methodologies.
  4. Provide a detailed proposed budget and timeline.
  5. Where do you expect to submit the completed research and how will this work enhance future external funding opportunities?
  6. Note how this work will help the Center achieve its objectives.

Proposals to invite visitor / speakers should address the following:

  1. Who will be invited and what are the proposed activities?
  2. Likely participants in the different activities and where will they be held?
  3. How will this help the Center achieve its objectives?
  4. Provide a detailed proposed budget.

Proposal to organize a conference:

  1. Proposed theme, speakers, discussants, agenda, etc.
  2. Likely participants and beneficiaries at Brown.
  3. How will this help the Center achieve its objectives?
  4. Provide a detailed proposed budget.
