In 2007, Brown University established the William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics at the Watson Institute for International Studies. The Center was founded with the generous support of William R. Rhodes '57, recipient of The Banker's first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award , the winner of the Latin Finance Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008, an expert on the current financial crisis, frequent contributor to the Financial Times, and a member of the Watson Institute's board of overseers.
The purpose of the Center is to promote path-breaking scholarly research and enhance teaching in the area of international economics and thereby make contributions to the policy dialogue on international issues. The Center seeks to advance the study of cross-border movements of capital, goods, services, and people, and to enhance the study of cross-country differences in growth, development, and income distribution.
The Center will use a number of strategies to accomplish these objectives, including: sponsoring research conferences, funding speakers and visitors, and granting seed money for promising research.
